REVIEW: Knuffle Bunny Too by Mo Willems

Have you met Pam Coughlin, better known as MotherReader? If not, you’re missing one of the funniest, most over-the-top writers in the kidlit blogging world. A librarian and Mommy from Virginia, her annual 48-hour book challenge keeps scores of bloggers bleary-eyed while reading and reviewing — and then reading each others’ reviews.

In September, she asks everyone for their favorite books of the year thus far, which caused a brief stir this time ’round when we pondered whether that would affect Cybils judging.

We decided it didn’t, mostly because nobody wanted to take down their own lists, and because it’s really, really hard to get mad at someone who cyber-stalks kidlit superstar Mo Willems with such flair. His long-awaited sequel to kiddie classic Knuffle Bunny hit #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list barely a nanosecond after it debuted Sept. 14. By then, it was ancient history to Pam, who’d nabbed an early copy:

Notice the curvature of the book? That’s because I had to take a picture of the F&G — or “fold and gather” — because the picture isn’t even on Amazon yet. The distinctly amateur quality of the photo also makes it perfectly clear that I am not showing some sort of publicity shot, but a picture of the book in my very own home. Sitting right beside me on the black desk chair.

Not that I’m excited about it or anything.

Okay, I am excited about it. Not only because I have it early. Not only because I got it personally. Not only because I seem to be the first to review it. I am excited about it because it’s really great. Really, really great.
