Borrowed Names by Jeannine Atkins

Laura Purdie Salas, one of our Round I Poetry judges, is a familiar face at the Cybils and well-known around the Kidlitosphere. An accomplished writer in her own right (and author of 2009 Cybils Poetry nominee Stampede), she also posts prompts for 15 Words or Less Poetry and is a frequent participant in Poetry Friday.

BorrowedNames One of the poetry nominees Laura reviewed on her blog was Borrowed Names: Poems About Laura Ingalls Wilder, Madam C.J. Walker, Marie Curie, and Their Daughters by Jeannine Atkins. This combination of poetry and biography focuses on the three aforementioned women and their relationships with their daughters. Laura says:

The beautiful, tension-filled poems are lovely and sometimes painful. The story of a troubled relationship finding resolution in shared stories is exquisite.
