I think some people aren't clear as to where the already nominated titles might be. Perhaps making that clear and adding a link to the form there where people can check the list and then nominate might create fewer repeats.

Charlotte

People might also be not checking because they assume that they don't have too--the front page post says "It'll be kicked back to you if you try to nominate more than one book per genre, or if the book's already been nominated by someone else." So maybe, like Tanita suggested, making it clearer where to check, and making it clearer that you do still need to check, would help.

I didn't realize the form wasn't coming back to people. I'll check on the status of that and see what we can do. If it's a tech problem, you're all forgiven. :)

Another thing to mention: people should also scroll down to check the list of already-nominated-not-eligible titles. :)

The nomination form will kick out duplicate nominations if they have the same ISBN. But in some cases, there are multiple editions with different ISBNs, and the form doesn't recognize that they are the same books. And Book Apps don't have ISBNs at all, as far as I know.

The form can't reject duplicate titles, because sometimes completely different books have the same title. (I keep being confused every time I see that new book called Starcrossed that came out this year, because I keep thinking it's the Elizabeth C. Bunce book from last year).

It is a good suggestion to include a link to the current nominations list on the nomination form.

Also, I just want to reassure people we aren't going to be mad if you accidentally nominate a book that's already been nominated. The thing that is upsetting is when there are a bunch of people nominating the same one, and it seems like it is a coordinated and intentional effort.

Madigan

I thought it was okay to just put in ISBNs that I liked... it did kick out lots of my nominations. There is a general sense of excitement, and hurry to get your titles in before someone else does. Unless, of course, you are the kind of deliberate and careful person to thoughtfully consider which unknown gems might get overlooked, waiting until the end, so as not to "waste" your vote on obvious choices. Sadly, I'm never well-organized enough to be that sort of person! I always figure, "Don't let perfect be the enemy of the good!" and throw caution to the winds, nominating away.

Sheila Ruth

Madigan, please don't be too concerned about it. We love the enthusiasm and excitement, and don't want people to feel constrained. But we've had a couple of cases where the same book is nominated over and over in a short period of time, which makes it seem like someone was egging people on to get as many nominations for a particular book as possible. That's what we don't want, especially not if it might be someone associated with the book trying to stack the deck. It doesn't help a book to get multiple nominations!

Sondy

One of the books I nominated came up as not nominated yet, and I was very happy. But then when I looked at the list, someone else had nominated it, and they got the picture! :) Since it was the first morning of nominations, I suspect we nominated at about the same time.

Sheila Ruth

Hi Sondy. Are you talking about Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone? You're right that they were nominated close together, but I checked the times carefully and the other one beat you by about 15 minutes. Yours had an incorrect ISBN, which is why it didn't tell you that it was already nominated. However, if you had nominated first, even with the incorrect ISBN, I would have corrected the ISBN and passed yours as the eligible one.
