Review: Harlem Hellfighters

For those in the U.S.: Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day! I was thinking that we’d feature something to do with the Civil Rights movement today. I found several books among our nominees that would fit, including YA Nonfiction finalist The Freedom Summer Murders, by Don Mitchell; Fiction Picture Book Nominee Knock Knock, by Daniel Beaty and Bryan Collier; but the one I’m choosing to feature isn’t exactly Civil Rights, but I think fits. Nicole at It’s All Comic to Me featured Graphic Novel finalist The Harlem Hellfighters, by Max Brooks and Caanan White. She wrote:

The book is well-written and while being an historical account of the all-black regiment is also an horrendous depiction of the ghastly racism that was so rampant in the US at that time, seething unfiltered straight into its military.
