REVIEW
We Are the Ship by Kadir Nelson

In the header of her blog Carol's Corner, blogger and literacy coach Carol Wilcox presents a quote by well-known author Kate DiCamillo: "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or a duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." Carol writes enthusiastic and heartfelt reviews that do just that–offer up a feast of books to be enjoyed and devoured.

WeAreTheShip
Carol's part of the Middle Grade/Young Adult Non-Fiction category for this year's Cybils, and recently she reviewed Kadir Nelson's lushly painted We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball. Told by an "Everyman" narrator, the book uses both words and images to convey the history of this group of determined and courageous athletes.

The voice in the book is so real that you feel like you are right there on the field with the players. This is a story that's way bigger than baseball, however…. It's a story of creativity, and bravery, and passion, and joy.
